Osteopathy

What is Osteopathy

Osteopaths are primary health-care providers, which means that you don’t need a general practitioner’s referral to see an osteopath.

Osteopaths are qualified to perform a thorough physical examination and to recognise the signs of pathological processes, and to provide appropriate referrals when necessary.

Osteopaths specialise in manual therapy for the treatment of a wide range of musculoskeletal disorders.

Osteopathic treatment focuses on improving the structure and function of the musculoskeletal system.

Because osteopaths use hands-on techniques, pain relief is often immediate.

Techniques used to achieve this include:

- Soft tissue massage/ counterstrain to release areas of muscle tightness and address trigger points.

- Muscle energy techniques (or PNF techniques) which are used to normalise the resting length of muscles, and to improve joint movement.

- Gentle manipulation in order to restore normal joint range of movement.

- Articulation/ mobilisation (gentle, passive movements) in order to improve the quality and range of joint movement.

- Exercise prescription for rehabilitation (as an adjunct to “hands- on techniques).

- Postural and ergonomic advice.

Treatment

Conditions Treated
Osteopathy is useful in the management of many conditions, including:

- back pain - headaches & migraines
- joint pain - carpal tunnel syndrome
- tennis elbow - “RSI” type complaints
- neck pain - chronic pain conditions
- sports injuries - post-op mobility

“Hands-on” treatment means that most people will experience some level of pain relief/ increased mobility immediately after the initial visit.

Your First Visit
In your first appointment, your osteopath will take a thorough case history which will include detailed questions about the site and nature of your pain, and also your general medical history.

At Harley House Osteopathy we allow one hour for the initial consultation. This ensures that you have the opportunity to discuss with us any questions you may have about your treatment, and that you are able to provide us with information about your complaint and medical history in a relaxed and unhurried environment.

Following discussion of the diagnosis and treatment plan, a brief physical examination will be performed. Depending on your symptoms, this may include neurological examination, measurement of blood pressure, and orthopaedic testing. If any signs of pathological conditions are present, you will be referred appropriately.

Your osteopath will then assess your posture, check the amount and quality of movement at different joints, and identify any areas of muscular tightness. Treatment is then focused upon restoring normal joint movement and muscle tone/ function.

Practitioners

Osteopathy is a government regulated form of primary health care. Registration as an osteopath requires the completion of a full-time 5 year university degree at a government approved university.

Training involves the study of many different areas of science and health care including the basic sciences, dermatology, microbiology, pathology, neuroanatomy and obstetrics/ paediatrics - in addition to musculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment. Osteopaths are given the title 'doctor' as they are seen as specialists in manual therapy for musculoskeletal conditions.

In addition to government registration, all osteopaths at Harley House Osteopathy are members of the Australian Osteopathic Association, and committed to the maintenance of the highest ethical standards.

David is a founding partner of Harley House Osteopathy. He graduated from RMIT University in 1999 and, working predominantly in private practice, also has a keen interest in sports medicine.

He has been involved with Victorian Premier League football teams, and was the osteopath for the Australian Taekwondo Team in 2007, the Australian Olympic Taekwondo Team at the Olympic qualifiers in Manchester and New Caledonia in 2007 and in the lead-up to the Beijing Games.

His involvement with sport at the elite level has led to further research in areas such as rehabilitation, training methods and nutrition.

Outside of his osteopathic interests, David enjoys cycling, playing indoor soccer and is an avid movie-goer.

Frequently Asked Questions - FAQ's

Harley House Osteopathy - Melbournne City Osteo Clinic

Chronic Pain

Yes, if your pain:

- has lasted for longer than 3 months,

- if it has lasted for longer than it usually takes for   tissues to heal,

- or if you have seen several different practitioners   with only short-term pain relief,

then your condition is considered to be chronic.

This (as you will have found) can be a complex and challenging problem to manage. Most patients with chronic complaints who make an appointment with an osteopath have already tried many other therapies and undergone many different imaging procedures and tests, with little success.

These patients are so frustrated with their condition that they are disappointed when x-rays or MRIs come back with normal results – they want proof that the pain they feel is not “in their head”.

What many people don’t realise is that in many cases of lower back pain (one of the most common musculoskeletal problems), no positive findings will be found on imaging.

Even when abnormalities are present, there is often no correlation between them and the patient’s pain. This is because most cases of back pain are caused by biomechanical dysfunction, or problems of movement (such as joint restrictions, and muscle tightness/weakness).

Osteopathic treatment is aimed specifically at the restoration of normal body mechanics, and this, along with a holistic approach, is one of the things that make it so effective in chronic and recurrent conditions.

Back Pain

Yes

Back pain (with or without leg pain) commonly arises from one or more of these factors:

- Biomechanical dysfunction – such as altered spinal joint range of movement, muscle tightness or   weakness, and nerve irritation.

- Nerve impingement – which may be associated with a disruption to the disc, or other space occupying lesion.

- Acute strain/ sprain of a muscle or ligament.

Less common causes include arthritic or auto-immune conditions and visceral (organ) referral.

Your osteopath will make a diagnosis as to the cause of your pain, and refer or treat you appropriately.

Biomechanical dysfunction is impossible to diagnose and assess if a practitioner is not trained appropriately in musculoskeletal diagnosis – this is why health professionals who do not specialise in this area are often uncertain of the cause and prognosis of back pain.

Patients often have the impression that back pain (in particular that which has been diagnosed as a “slipped disc, or disc protrusion”) is an extremely difficult condition to treat, and that poor results are expected.  This is not the case.

The vast majority of patients with lower back pain will respond well to conservative (non-invasive) management. Surgical intervention is only required in a very small percentage of cases.

Medication may be beneficial in some cases, but this addresses only the symptoms, rather than the cause of the problem.
